MEMBER FORCES - GLOBAL Coordinate System

STAAD cannot report Beam Results in the Global Coordinate Systems in the UI Results Table. However, it is capable of printing Member Forces using the Global Coordinate System to the Analysis Report.

This hinders downstream processes that require the user to export results from STAAD to Excel. It is possible to copy and paste data from the Results Table to Excel, however, the Beam Results are limited to Local Coordinate System.

When the user copies Beam Results from the Analysis Output report, all the text is placed in one column, and needs to be manually fixed using Text To Column, and manually checked to correct any formatting issues. This is not a robust process.

In our case, we need to do Calculations for hundreds of Load Combinations all at once. It is a lot simpler to perform mathematical functions on multiple rows of forces all at once using Excel.

    Thank you for posting your idea. What is the value of reporting the member end forces in the global axes? Any information relating to the member only really makes sense when reported in the members own local axis. Is it for resolving forces from multiple members connecting at a node for say a connection design? If so would it be preferable to have a tool that reported the forces from a number of selected members connected at a specified node AND resolved into an axis system that was relevant to the connection you are planning to make?


    With regard to copying data from a text file such as the ANL output, you are right that as a straight paste with CTRL+V Excel will place each row of data into a single cell. However, if you use the option in the Paste drop down of 'Use Text import wizard...' Then you can instruct Excel to use spaces as delimiters and the data will be then be split into different cells.
